Effective technology implementation in schools leads to significantly higher student achievement and positive financial impact. That is a bold statement, but one with the backing of Project RED, a team that conducted a survey of a thousand schools to find out what makes technology integration work. Project RED has concluded that properly implemented educational technology, especially 1-to-1 programs where technology is continuously accessible, substantially improves student achievement and can be revenue positive at the local, state, and federal levels. The key is successful integration that brings about transformational change.

This country was not built by people with low expectations. It was built by great leaders in communities and states who stepped up, sometimes individually and sometimes together, to achieve great things. It was built by responding to the challenges at hand and creating solutions for future generations. Today’s most crucial challenge is enhancing the quality of our public education system and addressing how well—or not—schools are preparing our young people for their futures.

Schools have been in a technology implementation crisis. That was an unanticipated finding from our Project RED (2010) research that examined 1000 robust education technology sites – including 200 one-to-one sites. Best practices for integrating technology in schools have a major positive impact. However, they are not consistently or widely adopted.

None of us would go to a dentist or surgeon who wasn’t well-informed and updated on bleeding edge practice and technique.

Yesterday, we took a look at some of the data from the Pearson global education report, The Learning Curve. We compared the attitude towards education and the integration of technology into education (and life in general) between one of the chart toppers, South Korea, and the United States. In a series of forthcoming posts, we’re going to be looking at some country-specific data that was gathered during this study. Since your friendly Edudemic writers are U.S.-based, we’re going to start there. Take a look at the infographic below to learn more about the US in the categories that were defined for the study.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — President Obama visited an innovative middle school in central North Carolina on Thursday to demonstrate the Internet-based education programs that he is proposing to make available nationwide.

Speaking to an audience of excited teenagers in a steamy gymnasium, Mr. Obama called on the Federal Communications Commission to expand an existing program to provide discounted high-speed Internet service to schools and libraries, even if it meant increasing the fees that for years had been added to consumers’ phone bills. He said the initiative could lead to better technology at 99 percent of schools in five years.

The human brain wasn’t designed for industrial education.

It was shaped over millions of years of sequential adaptation in response to ever-changing environmental demands. Over time, brains grew in size and complexity; old structures were conserved and new structures emerged. As we evolved into social beings, our brains became incredibly sensitive to our social worlds.
